According to the latest rumours, Manchester United are set to offload Angel Di Maria to Paris Saint-Germain this summer—with Barcelona's Pedro Rodriguez lined up as his replacement.
Darren Lewis of the Mirror reports that PSG are confident of landing Di Maria at a cut price of £40 million—around £20 million less than United paid for him last year—the Argentinian's apparent determination to leave being used as a bargaining chip.
According to Lewis, "Di Maria failed to settle in Manchester after leaving Real Madrid with his wife particularly unhappy in the north west after a burglary at their Cheshire home in January."
Per Sky Sports, manager Louis van Gaal recently admitted the attacking midfielder's future at Old Trafford was unclear:
In football, it is a process, as I have said many times before in press conferences. It's not clear in one day. It's a process for Angel Di Maria, it's a process for Manchester United and we shall see.But he is still a member of Manchester United and he has said to me he will come on July 25.
The "flop" tag has been given to Di Maria in some quarters. However, there are encouraging signs for United supporters who want to keep hold of the 27-year-old.
Despite a number of injuries and often being played out of position, the Argentinian laid on 10 assists last season, as well as scoring four times.
As Squawka Dave illustrates, Di Maria was heavily involved in United's attacking play when he actually made it onto the pitch:
Football blogger Jonas Giaever believed those flashes of quality to be a positive sign for the Red Devils:
If the midfielder is keen to leave, United would probably be best served moving him on and making as much back for him as they can.
However, if Di Maria can be persuaded to remain at Old Trafford, then they could reap the rewards if they utilise his talents correctly.
Should the former option be the one chosen, then United could do a lot worse than bringing in Pedro to replace him. Lewis' report indicates the Red Devils will offer £18 million for the Spaniard's services.
The 27-year-old, despite his obvious talent, is restricted to being used as cover at Barcelona thanks to the Blaugrana's wealth of attacking talent.
With the 2016 European Championship just around the corner, Pedro will be desperate to play regular football in order to secure a place in Vicente del Bosque's squad.
The creative attacker scored 11 goals and recorded nine assists last season despite limited playing time, and he could bring this incisive play to United's forward line, which is lacking some firepower after the departures of Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao.
If Di Maria leaves, expect Pedro to arrive at Old Trafford shortly after.
